“Much education today is monumentally ineffective. All too often we are giving young people cut flowers when we should be teaching them to grow their own plants.”

John W. Gardner

Education in India falls under the control of both union government and the states. The various articles in the constitution provide for education as a fundamental right and as per government officials it is being carried out in an efficient way(no idea where they get there stats from!!!).According to Wikipedia 35% of our population is still illiterate, only 15% reach high school and only 7% graduate. The private education market in India is merely 5% although in terms of value is estimated to be $40 billion in 2008 and will increase to $68 billion by 2012.

Education is the most important and mandatory entity for a newborn after his/her mother’s milk in today’s practical world. Imparting quality education should be the motto of the institutions. On the contrary, quality of education has degraded considerably over last few years. Some of the  reasons cited by experts are:

  • Absence of a common regulatory body.
  • Lack of proper education policy.

Debate is on about the present education system and the applications of it. As per me we should better call it as “EXECUTION SYSTEM” because the purpose of imparting education is  long gone. It is pure business for those who impart education and a basic amenity for those who receive education. Various incidents across the country has raised questions on current education system. For instance death of a student due to the beating of a teacher was a highlighted  issue for many days and I can bet on it that there are thousands of such cases which do not even find a 4*4 column in the newspaper. There are news of suicides committed by students due to pressure of studies and parental pressures all over the internet and print media.

The present approach of the system needs some serious amendments. U can’t have same set of rules and regulations for every individual. Just as all fingers of hand are not equal similarly every child don’t have the same grey matter as we call it and this education system which we have now has become a mere tool for calculating this so called intelligence quotient(and that too has got flaws!!!).

Some may argue with facts like need of a standard to rate individuals, to define excellence but according to my perception you don’t need to rate individuals because they are not a commodity. The function of education should be to carve out the best in an individual not to fit him in amould and force him to be like one .

And if that is what it’s all about then we better rename it as execution system !!!!!
